The Tampa Bay Lightning set a modern NHL record when they tallied 33 shots in the second period of a 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. According to Elias, it was the most shots by a team in a period since 1955-56, when shots on goal were first recorded as an official statistic.

The Chicago Blackhawks became the first team in NHL history to start the season with five straight overtime games on Saturday.

Alex DeBrincat scored with nine second left in OT to beat the Blues 4-3, the second time this season Chicago has beaten St. Louis in overtime.

The New York Rangers had held the record with four OT games to start the 1997-98 season.
